In self-imposed exile for betraying the Eighth House of Scorpio and addicted to the sexual energy of a water Elemental he cannot have, Nash Graffias drifts from city to city seducing every woman he meets in an effort to feed a voracious need he is helpless to resist―until he rescues a fiery redhead from rogue extorris hell-bent on stealing her soul.

Rousseau Elebash, halfeborne fire Elemental, is less than pleased when a bad-boy Scorpion walks into her gym commanding an energy so powerful, it sets her soul ablaze. But as his latent desire begins to overcome her and she succumbs to the call of his energy, she discovers that there are worse things…evil things in the world darker and more dangerous than an exiled Scorpion.

The Eighth House The Elemental Series Book II edition by TL McCallan Literature Fiction eBooks

My second trip into McCallan's world of the Elementals found a member of "The Eighth House" of Scorpio in a self-imposed exile. Introduced in the first book (The Twelfth House) Nash Graffias is the 2nd natural ruler of the house of Scorpio (or 2nd in line, 2nd in command - however you want to think of it).

Nash has put himself into exile after encountering some ... let's call them `problems' during the events surrounding the capture/rescue of both the natural ruler of the Twelfth House of Pisces and his own leader of the Scorpions. This story picks up several months down the line with Nash addicted to an energy he knows he can't have, finding an elemental woman he knows he shouldn't want and eventually getting himself and the woman he comes to love into some seriously sticky situations. Nash finds himself quite literally in a lion's den as he is frequenting a gym owned by a lioness elemental (Rousseau).

After he saves her from an unsavory group of disgraced elementals, the unlikely pair form a connection that leads to a tenuous friendship and (hey it's a romance novel) eventually love. The fiery lioness (and I have to point out REDHEAD) is a woman I'd love to have on my side any day especially given the ease with which she is able to stand her own against not only gorgeous but stubborn and often infuriating men.

There is a benefit to those sticky situations that Nash finds himself in and I'm not talking about a big confrontation that was long in coming. I got a little more of my book crush Night Sky. Seriously ladies ... this is a guy that you probably wouldn't want to meet on a dark night in a dark alley, but who will do whatever it took to ensure that those he loves, cares about, or even seemingly knows a little are safe and cared for. But to be fair to the others, pretty much every man in these books has these traits ... Night is just .... better.

The quick wit of these men and women kept me smiling throughout. They give as good as they take and are so well written I can even imagine running into Rousseau the lioness, Calypso the Great Fish, Liam and Den the lions and so many others on the street or in a bar.

The Eighth House The Elemental Series Book II edition by TL McCallan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I first downloaded this book at a friend's request and I'm so glad I did. I enjoyed it so much that I've recommended it to two other friends - one male and one female. I make that distinction because this book is a good read for men or women. The genre it's placed under is paranormal romance. It definitely has a strong undercurrent of sexual tension which will appeal to the women but never fear guys it's packed with action too. I'm thinking maybe it needs its own genre classification since I personally wouldn't connect the action with it's current one. This combination of genres really packed a punch and made it hard for me to stop reading.

As for the paranormal aspect of the book - no we're not talking ghosts. It is connected to the 12 zodiac signs but only loosely as the author states. The Elementals in the story line are anything but what you'd expect. The explanation of the Elementals is a little difficult to understand at first but once you get the hang of it you'll be thrilled. Personally, I went back and reread the first part of the book once I got a better understanding. I enjoyed all the characters and even found myself getting invested in their lives to some degree. Wouldn't mind seeing them come back. This book though combines this world of the Elementals really well with the world that is. Therefore, it's easy to follow the story line.

Check out this book and look out for more in the future from this up and coming author. To see what is already on its way check out author's great website. It's easy to navigate and has lots of information.
Shallow enough to be a fast-paced, straight shot story, but complex enough to keep it interesting, the Eighth House was a quick read and the short syntax allowed for a definite page turner that was honestly hard to put down. I felt compelled to learn the rest of the story and piece together the different facets. Though inconsistent at times, the characterization was effective and entertaining.

A little confusing at first, it was easy to acclimate to the varied perspectives and timelines. I definitely appreciated the impeccable infusion of the supernatural into the modern world. Originally I was a bit skeptical of the foreign terminology, but my curiosity was quickly sated. I liked the integration of the caste system with the societal norms of an entirely different humanoid race, even the not-so-subtle allusions to a common deity.

The imagery was integrated skillfully, adding to the flow and depth of the story rather than distract from it. This genre is definitely outside my usual; the sexually charged undercurrents were certainly foreign, but I appreciated the raw, unadulterated, unapologetic passion expressed so vividly.

I would be remiss in failing to acknowledge a few non-sequiters, a few under developed tangents, some historical inaccuracies, and the occasional typo, but those are primarily cosmetic flaws. If those are essentially the worst aspects of the novel, I'm hardly complaining.

Basically, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. It made me laugh, smirk, even face-palm a few times, all the while on the proverbial edge of my seat. I'd recommend it.
